Why Rotate the Tires On Your Car?

Why is it so important to rotate your car’s tires at regular intervals? And how often should you rotate your tires? Every Matthews car owner can agree that they don’t want their investment in a new set of tires to go to waste. Rotating them regularly is the best way to ensure you get the full lifespan from your tires! Learn more about why we rotate tires and how often to rotate tires with the Hendrick Chevrolet Monroe service team below.

Does My Car’s Drivetrain Affect Tire Rotation?

Think about your daily commute to Waxhaw. Every time you turn, hit the brakes, or accelerate, you’re creating friction between your tires and the road. That friction causes tire tread wear. Where the bulk of tread wear occurs is dependent on your car’s drivetrain type. Learn more, right here:

  • FWD Cars: In a front-wheel-drive vehicle, engine power is received by the front wheels. They also take the brunt of the stopping force when you hit the brakes, and are responsible for steering and accelerating. As a result, the front tires wear out faster than the rear tires, but tire rotation keeps the wear even.
  • RWD Cars: You guessed it – rear-wheel-drive cars send the engine power to the rear wheels. However, it’s the front wheels that remain responsible for steering and much of the braking power. Even so, the rear tires are going to wear out faster than the front tires, but the rate of wear will be slower.
  • AWD Cars: An all-wheel-drive car is designed to distribute engine power more evenly across all four wheels. Still, some experts believe that the rear tires will manage to wear out faster.
  • Intelligent AWD: Some modern cars have Intelligent AWD, which automatically sends engine power to whichever wheels can use it best. This is great for performance but can have its own effect on the rate at which your tires wear.

How Often to Rotate Tires

You should consult your owner’s manual for a model-specific interval, but most automakers recommend a tire rotation every six months or every 5,000 to 8,000 miles.

What Does Rotating Your Tires Do?

Curious what rotating your tires really does? If you don’t have your car’s tires rotated at the recommended intervals, the tires will wear out faster than they should and at uneven rates. This can cause a number of unpleasant issues, including:

  • Poor grip with the road below
  • A flat tire or tire blowout
  • Uncomfortable ride quality
  • Accelerated deterioration of the brake pads
